14 – Motivations

LIAM STARED AT THE living room of the suite. The sofa pillows were on the floor, the fake hibiscus stems had been scattered and vase that held them turned upside down. The drawers of the desk had been emptied on the floor, the placemats from the table flung around the room. The small blue bag where Blake kept Ricardo’s pills had been emptied, and vials were scattered on the table.

“What the hell happened here?” Blake demanded as he muscled into the room, with a lack of insight that did not surprise Liam at all.

“Looks like someone tossed the place.” Liam turned to Ricardo, who stood there with his mouth agape, messenger bag still slung over his shoulder. “What were they looking for? What’s in that bag you’re carrying that’s important enough for someone to break in here to search for it?”

“It is the proof I have of the Iranian involvement in the AMIA bombing.”

“Blake, do me a favor?” Aidan asked.

“What? I’m not paying for any damages.”

“Please check Ricardo’s pills and make sure no one has messed with them.”

Blake still looked clueless. “His pills?”

Liam watched Ricardo settle onto the sofa in a near-catatonic state. At least he wasn’t freaking out, though Liam thought that was a possibility.

Aidan pulled Blake aside and spoke in a low voice, though Liam could hear their conversation. “We have to take every precaution. Make sure no one replaced a set of Ricardo’s pills with something else, something toxic. You can pull up the Physician’s Desk Reference on your laptop and check to make sure the pills are what he was prescribed.”

“You think someone could do that?”

“I do. And you’re the one who gives him his pills, so if he dies and an autopsy report shows he was given an overdose of sedatives, for example, the police will look at you.”

Blake’s eyes and mouth opened in horror. “When did you start thinking like that?”

“Sometime after you pushed me into a new life.”

It embarrassed Liam how pleased he was to hear Aidan speak that way to Blake.

“Before you do that,” Aidan continued, “you should run a virus scan. Your laptop was here when the intruder was.”

“I can do that. I have a strong program my firm pays a lot of money for.” Blake sat at the table with his laptop and Ricardo’s pill bottles. Liam called the hotel desk and asked them to send someone from security up to the suite.

Aidan sat with Ricardo, who had begun to shake again, and tried to calm him. Liam walked into the bedroom that Ricardo and Blake shared, where the situation was the same. The bed had been stripped, the mattress turned on its side. The bureau drawers had been dumped on the floor, the clothes from the closet tossed as well.

Liam checked the phone, unscrewing the base with a screwdriver he kept on his keychain. It didn’t look like anyone had messed with the phone, or installed any listening devices. He walked back out to the living room. “Blake.
